Extra-Curricular Activities at LCA

Youth Ministry:
The goal of the LCA Youth Ministry is to help foster and develop the spiritual and faith lives of our students. Throughout the year, there are opportunities for students in the areas of service, prayer, and almsgiving. Below is a list of various activities that the LCA Youth Ministry has participated in and is responsible for:
Altar Servers:
Students who have made their Baptism and First Communion may serve as altar servers. Students from any parish who are altar servers may serve as altar servers at school liturgies. Students at LCA are invited to become altar servers at St. Patrick's Church if they have been Baptized and made their First Communion.

Jowdy World Knowledge Challenge:
This academic competition is sponsored by the Lawrence Public Library and funded by the Jowdy Trust. Participants may be Upper Academy students in grades 5-8.
Science Club:
Science Club is run by students from Merrimack College through the Stevens Service Learning Center and facilitated by LCA staff moderators. Science Club meets for an hour once a week for 20 weeks. The program helps to connect students to future life choices, such as college and career options. Participants, both male and female, learn that science and math are important and engaging. The program fosters pride in their accomplishments and provides positive role models for our students as they work closely with college students to engage our students in hands-on enrichment activities based in the areas of physical and biological science and math. Some activities have included:
Robert Frost Poetry Bee:
The Robert Frost Poetry Bee is an annual event held in May and hosted by the Robert Frost Foundation. Grades 5-8 will have the opportunity to learn and memorize a poem by Lawrence native, Robert Frost, to recite before a panel of judges, staff, and peers.
Spelling Bee:
Each year our school participates in the Merrimack Valley Regional Catholic Schools Spelling Bee held at Sacred Hearts School in Bradford, MA. One student from each grade in grades 1-8 will represent LCA as we compete against other Catholic schools in the Merrimack Valley. The Spelling Bee takes place during Catholic Schools Week.
High School Placement Test Prep:
In the beginning of the academic year, eighth grade students have the opportunity to participate in after school test prep classes to better prepare them for taking the high school entrance exams. These after school prep sessions typically last through November.
Principal's Cabinet:
Principal's Cabinet members serve as LCA tour guides to perspective students and families at our open houses throughout the school year. This leadership opportunity is for enthusiastic eighth graders who love and are spirited about LCA.
Drama Club:
Students in grades 3-8 have the opportunity twice a year to put on liturgical performances in celebration of Christmas and Easter. Students in grades 5-8 have the opportunity to audition for a play chosen by the Drama Club Director(s).
