Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)
Students at LCA will be introduced to a variety of healthy fresh fruit and vegetables in school as a result of
this FFVP grant (https://www.fns.usda.gov/ffvp/fresh-fruit-and-vegetable-program). Samples will be placed
throughout the school and small samples will be passed out to students. Weekly menus will include “Fun
Facts” explaining what the food is, where it is from, and health benefits of eating it.
This will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Monday
Pears
Rich in folate, copper, vitamin C and potassium
Over 3,000 varieties and pear trees grow best in volcanic soil & need plenty of water
Pears do not ripen while on the tree
China is the largest producer
Oregon’s official state fruit
Washington is the top US producer of pears.
Wednesday
Cubanelle Pepper
Known as the “Cuban pepper” & grows 5 – 7”
Native to India and introduced to Europe by Spanish & Portuguese explorers
Full of vitamin A, C, B6, antioxidants & folate
Thin skin with thick flesh & has a mild, sweet taste. Comes in shades of yellow, orange or red
Friday
Watermelon
Watermelon comes from the cucumber family and is both a fruit and vegetable.
First recorded harvest was 5,000 years ago in Egypt.
It’s high in fiber, vitamin A & C.
Every part of the watermelon is edible and is 92% water.
Look on the underside for the creamy yellow spot. It becomes more yellow when ripened.
Due to the uncertainty of food deliveries and shortages by manufacturers, LCA’s menu will be posted on the website by Sunday.
This institute is an equal opportunity provider.
