Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)
Students at LCA will be introduced to a variety of healthy fresh fruit and vegetables in school as a result of
this FFVP grant (https://www.fns.usda.gov/ffvp/fresh-fruit-and-vegetable-program). Samples will be placed
throughout the school and small samples will be passed out to students. Weekly menus will include “Fun
Facts” explaining what the food is, where it is from, and health benefits of eating it.
This will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Monday
Granny Smith Apples
Maria Ann Smith, also known as "Granny Smith" discovered the Granny Smith apple in Australia in 1868.
It is used as the logo for Apple Records.
Popular for their tart flavor & store longer, instead of two months you get four months.
Third most popular apple in the U.S.
Provide more antioxidants than any other apple.
Wednesday
Clementines
Origin - a hybrid of a sweet orange and a mandarin orange from the Algerian garden of Marie-Clement in 1902.
They are wider than they are tall.
Naturally seedless but some may have up to 10 seeds.
They can be frozen for long-term storage.
Contain fiber, calcium, potassium, vitamin C, B6 & antioxidants.
In season from October - January.
Easy to peel - 8-10 segments.
Friday
Spinach
Is a natural multi-vitamin. Contains vitamin A, E, C, K, iron, calcium, zinc, and magnesium.
It can live through some frost, while most other would die. Helps maintain good vision, healthy heart, healthy bones, and fights against cancer.
In Medieval Times, the green pigment extracted from the spinach was used for artwork.
It is an annual -- grows for one season and has to be replanted yearly.
Due to the uncertainty of food deliveries and shortages by manufacturers, LCA’s menu will be posted on the website by Sunday.
This institute is an equal opportunity provider.
